Somehow Mani Ratnam's 'Kadal' is reminded when you sea the see. Oops, when you see the sea. That's how your mind is going to be when you have nothing but sands and sea being shown in a story that was supposedly about an escape from the hands of death!
The teaser enlightens us about a possible plot as to how the hero is going to escape from his captors! Well instead of talking about the escape, the movie revolves around a love story that is the root cause for the hero to be caught in a foreign land!
Director Bharat Bala is a highly creative man. Praise him for the choice of the story but his execution is quite not there. Drama is the genre that the movie belongs to. At any given time the lethargic drama the movie unfolds, will just tire you to the core, that you ask for some respite and the answer would be AR Rahman's music. A R Rahman's reputation for bad background music continues in this as well. He induces some pace with his background music but somehow not captivating to the audience who were just yawning.
Songs and visuals save the day for the producer. Because the whole thought process for shooting songs is different from shooting scenes from the screenplay. French Cinematographer Mark Koninckx freezes his frames quite tight, may be to capture Dhanush's now-too-cliched expressions. Dhanush has done this many and more times and must quit trying to over-perform than do it subtly.
Talking about the love part of it. The chemistry between Dhanush and Parvathy Menon is so induced, you feel "is this even necessary, come on show the hero escape now"! In one particular scene, when the girl in love brings her sweetheart some fish, which is their staple because their fisher-folk, you have MGR's "Thottal Poo Malarum" in the background that talks about a blossoming love. We got reminded of Late Vaali then. Rest in peace sir!
Talking about adventure, escaping, etc. there have been plenty of movies that have talked about survival. In this story, the survival part is reduced to a minimum and the drama around it is given more light. All you see is the hero hanging on to a truck and fleeing! Come on, something more please!
For someone who loves the sea and his strength lying in it, this is a story of his bravery and love. The director would have hoped to make a better movie than what he has actually shot!
